About Adjunct Therapies

Explore our adjunct therapies that work in tandem with acupuncture.

What are our popular adjunct therapies?

Moxibustion

Heat therapy that helps reduce pain by releasing tension held in an area due to increasing the flow of blood and lymph.

Gua Sha

Gentle manual therapy applied to the skin to create an anti-inflammatory response, increase blood flow to the muscles to relax and release tension.

Cupping

Gentle manual therapy using cups to create suction over muscles to reduce pain and inflammation, increase blood flow and promote relaxation.

Individual results may vary. No guarantee of specific results is warranted or implied and your results will depend on many factors (read full disclaimer).

How Adjunct Therapies Work

Increase blood circulation to painful areas

Blood flow increases in the tissues around the injured area. This allows nutrients and oxygen to enter the site of injury to begin the healing process.

Sedate the nervous system

Increasing circulation and releasing muscle tension helps the nervous system to relax, helping with the healing process.

Detoxification

Increasing the supply of healthy, oxygenated blood to muscles and skin brings nourishment and allows toxins to be carried away by the lymph.

Common Questions

  • Each therapy is creating a reaction in the body that may cause a slight discomfort at first but decreases pain by 70% once finished.

  • Gua sha and cupping both leave ‘marks.’ These are temporary side effects from the treatment and will last anywhere from 3 days to 2 weeks.

  • The therapies are done on all areas of the body to stimulate circulation, calm the nervous system, and have effects on various organs and tissues. Depending on the pain, the area could be limited to something the size of the neck or as large as the whole back.

  • There is no bleeding and no risk for infection. We give you clear directions on how to care for the area after treatment.

  • Depending on the form of adjunct treatment, it may be once a week or every other week.

  • Unlike many other clinics, we won’t try to get you coming weekly for months on end. Our goal is to get results efficiently and quickly so you don’t need continual follow-up. Most likely you’ll have weekly sessions for about 6-12 weeks or so. Then, we’ll need to start making room for all the friends and loved ones you’re going to send to us!

Success Story: Pain Relief

I deal with a number of physical issues that no amount of exercise, diet, rest, or medicine can treat alone. But in combination with Leigh's incredible skills, I am able to keep doing the things I love, and do them much more comfortably and with more confidence.
